Player’s Letter: June 2017

Each month a post like this will shares server cost information, in game updates, and
how donations and my time are spent.

Server Costs:

Offering Liberty Minecraft costs me $17.37/month. This includes server and web hosting. Our Liberty Minecraft server for 1 full year costs $161.09 or $13.43/month. LibertyMinecraft.com’s entire cost for 1 year is $47.28 or $3.94/month. The BlueHost invoice also includes 2 additional years of web hosting for which we received a considerable discount.

This Month In Focus:

June was all about providing value in demand. IPencil wanted more ways to share Liberty Minecraft. Now we’re on twitter, discord, reddit, and facebook. I can now be reached at nathan@libertyminecraft.com. I was a guest on LibertyNerds.com’s Reality Anxiety podcast. I wrote ads for JuniorMoneyMakers.com’s soon to be released podcast. These efforts and others are to increase awareness about Liberty Minecraft.

RadioactiveLee wanted less invasive Subscriber tags, he wanted lag issues addressed as they happened, and he wanted our anti-cheat system to work better with Minecraft 1.12. Subscriber tags have been reworked, and dozens of hours were invested this month solving problems as they happened after the launch of 1.12. I will continue to work hard.

RocketPug_ wanted more ways to change his nickname and the ability to use color codes on signs. Nickname length has been increased to provide more options, and for the first time ever players can now unlock color codes on signs as they rank up.

These are some of the ways that I have and will continue to provide value, but June was a big one!

The World of Color update launched in June. This release was paired with two brand new guides on our website for Improving Minecraft Performance and Playing Minecraft Snapshots. Updates have continued nearly every day to keep our server secure and running smoothly.

Player owned portals were released this month. Portal creation is now entirely decentralized. The guide released with it is just one of the many new articles posted through the month of June.

Behind the Scenes!

This month I coordinated with Mr. Mark A. Tilsher of juniormoneymakers.com to run advertisements in an up-and-coming podcast. These new ads are evergreen and can be used in the future.

A sudden problem with lag during the month meant many hours were spent with the support of Host Havoc’s excellent staff. Our network connection has been tested and retested. Our server is now on new hardware and has a new IP address. I will use that experience to solve similar problems faster next time.

Mojang also updated their terms of service for commercial use. I used that opportunity to learn how I can fully comply with their terms. As a result, all players get /fly at top rank.

Our website can now be accessed using SSL and website backups will now be completed monthly. Behind the scenes NullCase is exhausted. It’s been quite a month.

Liberty in Action:

Every day our players are learning liberty by playing it. Here are just a few examples:

  • PizzaJon answered an unanswered question: he broke bedrock and created the worlds first physical accessway to the roof of the nether. But the question is now what?
  • RodericDragonbow begins selling Mushroom Blocks at a price which competes with the cheapest fuel in Liberty Minecraft: sticks. With a Witch Farm, sticks can be produced with no additional effort, but mushroom blocks must be harvested manually. Is this a bubble? How will he manage without regulation?
  • RodericDragonbow opens a horse vendor. An incredible concept but can he get the technology right? I’m optimistic that he will!
  • IPencil9000 and RodericDragonbow resolve a boundary dispute! A small land claim with a bed belonging to IPencil9000 was in an area that RodericDragonbow wanted. The land was not for sale, but I believed I could arbitrate the trade. I bought the land at 440% above the price of the claimblocks and sold it at a 226% profit. Roderic consolidated his land to streamline the look of his brand new business. We conducted our business over two days without any red tape!
  • RocketPug_ explores the Wool market without speculating – creates a shop that sells above my price but does not buy out my stock. This patient approach may hold value.
  • IPencil9000 begins to offer inventory insurance to explorers. Several uninsured players fall out of the world and lose everything. Perhaps more players will start to consider IPencil’s offer.
  • Flameau, L645, RodericDragonbow and others all flock to the only Mooshroom Island in Liberty. How will they deal with scarce space in our unregulated free market?
  • Prices of Gold, Health Potions, Iron, and a variety of other common goods have fallen as a result of continued innovations. The server-wide standard of living continues to rise.

There’s so much more happening at Liberty Minecraft!
Don’t miss out!

Operations and Updates:

Minecraft Update 1.12 dominated the schedule this month. Thirty two separate updates were tested and implemented during June. Each one taking between 10 and 30 minutes. All critical features were impacted. During that time three backups were performed to protect your hard work.

Early in June a hardware issue was investigated. In the end, our server was moved to new hardware and has a new IP address. This process involved updating our website guides, sharing live updates on discord, and also updating our enjin page.

Not everything went perfectly. A communication error for which I am responsible caused us to lose between 2 and 4 hours of work on the morning of June 12th. However, my policy of creating backups saved us weeks of lost time. A backup had been created early that morning. I will continue to be vigilant in protecting your hard work, and I will improve from this communication error.

On June 17th our server experienced lag during twelve hours into Sunday morning. I have been provided with no explanation. However, I ran several tests with the help of Host Havoc’s support team. We have proof that will save us time in the future. These tests have also saved us money that might have been wasted on an unnecessarily larger server.
